习水中亚热带常绿阔叶林自然保护区1995年经国务院批准公布为国家级自然保护区。该保护区是以保护中亚热带常绿阔叶林森林生态系统及珍稀植物资源的保护区。位于黔西北县西面、北面与四川省江津、合江两县接壤，西面与赤水市相连，西南与四川古蔺县交界。
该保护区气候温和，雨量充沛，空气湿润，地势起伏大，垂直差异明显，故动、植物资源十分丰富。已查明的国家一级保护植物有珙桐、银杏，二级保护的什物有桫椤、鹅掌楸、杜仲、红花木莲、红豆树、华南五针松、闽楠、厚朴、福建柏、香果树等。
该区动物资源也很丰富，已查明的动物有400余种，其中兽类71种，占全省种数的48%，鸟类138种，约占全省种数的34%，两栖类21种，占全省种数的35%，爬行类32种，占全省种数的32%，鱼类32种，约占全省种数的30%。昆虫144种。其中列入国家保护的动物有35种，属国家一级保护的有华南虎、云豹，二级保护有猕猴、藏酋猴、黑熊、苏门羚、林麝、穿山甲、白冠长尾雉、大鲵、大灵猫、小灵猫、白鹇、红腹锦鸡、白腹锦鸡等。
该区高山峡谷，地貌奇特，林木葱茏，红岩绿荫，鸟语蝉鸣，山川秀丽。其中同仙栖、长嵌沟、大杉王、望乡台、五指山、天鹅池均是开展旅游的好地方。
