垂直分布 vertical distribution
指从与地面高度或水层深度的关系所确定的生物分市，是生态分布的一个方面，为水平分布的反义词。在山岳，随着高度的升高，气温逐渐降低，所以从山麓到山顶，低温或高温便成为分布的限制因素而出现若干个生物分布界线，特别是固定性种类或是移动性小的种类，垂直分布尤为明显。在日本本州中部的山岳，是按下列次序排列的：阔叶常绿林带（低平地带，海拔0-700米）、夏绿乔木林带（夏绿乔木群落）（山岳地带，700-1700米）、针叶林带（亚高山带，1700-2500米）、灌木林及草本植物带（高山带，2500米以上）。这种垂直分布带，与由温度因素而出现的南北方向的水平分布带一样，表现为由低地到高地方向的分布，因此可作为山岳生态系统水平的成层结构来看待。此外，在水底，也可以看到水层深度所形成的垂直分布，而在湖泊，则可分为各种群落，如湖滨带、亚湖滨带、深湖带。在海洋，也可分为潮间带、潮下带、潮周带、渐深海带、深海带、超深海带。这些群落，呈成层分布，作为水中生态系统的成层结构来对待。
