河北红松洼自然保护区位于河北省围场满族蒙古族自治县境内,地理坐标为东经117°18ˊ-117°35ˊ,北纬42°10ˊ-42°20ˊ,总面积7300公顷。保护区于1994年经河北省人民政府批准建立,是一个以亚高山草甸为主要保护对象的自然保护区。
本区地处蒙古高原东南沿,地貌属高原台地,平均海拔1750米,区内有大小1个,水域面积8公顷,植被以亚高山草甸为主,建群种主要为莎草科,禾本科、豆科、菊科等次之。植被覆盖率在90%以上,为华北亚高山草甸保存最好的区域之一。由于 本区位于东北、华北、内蒙古三大植物区系交汇地带,生物多样性比较丰富,每 平方米种子植物达25种以上,区内分布有国家重点保护的药用植物8种以及白鹤、黑鹤、大鸨、大天鹅等国家保护野生动物20种,为我国中温型森林草原地带的生物物种基因库,具有重要的保护价值和科研价值。另一方面,本区位于西辽河和滦河和发源地,处于农牧交错地带,生态系统脆弱敏感,稳定度低,容易引起沙化退化。
