| 牛亚科 Bovinae；wild oxen 偶蹄目牛科的一亚科。体型大，体长160～350厘米，尾长18～110厘米，肩高60～280厘米，体重150～1 350千克；雌雄均具角（洞角），角的截面为圆形或三角形；颈、肩或背部常具有由脊椎的背棘支持并有发达的肌肉而形成的隆起。共6属：亚洲水牛属、非洲水牛属、倭水牛属、牛属、美洲野牛属和牦牛属计15种。分布于印度、菲律宾、中国和欧美大陆等地。 栖息于多种环境(森林、草原、5000～6000米的高山)，但都离不开水源。多数种类喜欢在泥水中翻滚或浸泡。食物包括草及各种草本植物、嫩枝、芽、叶、树皮、水生植物，甚至苔藓及地衣，有反刍习性。嗅觉灵敏，听觉亦好，视觉欠佳。多种种类集群生活，但在发情期、繁育期、冬季或干旱期，常组成不同群体：有时一些小群联合成大群，有时成体公牛单个离开大群。在发情期，雄性间互斗。孕期60～80天，每胎1仔极少2仔。幼仔出生后，很快能跟随成兽一起活动。 野牛是一类具有极高的经济价值的动物，其中有很多种类已被驯养为家畜，可供役用、肉乳用、制革等。 |
