小冠花为蝶形花科小冠花属多年生草本植物。匍匐茎约50厘米，叶奇数羽状，互生。伞形花序腋生，花冠浅粉色，花期5至7月，果熟期8至9月。小冠花系从国外新引进的地被花卉，茎叶茂密，花形美丽，花期长，园林中可用于花境或公路护坡。
小冠花原产南欧，性喜光。抗寒耐旱，亦较耐阴，由于水平生长能力较强，栽植后很快就能覆盖地面。适生温度15℃至30℃，不择土壤，在田园土、砂壤土、微酸性土或微碱性土中均能生长良好。播种、扦插、分株繁殖。播种可在早春进行，分株以春秋季为好，分株苗当年就能开花。小冠花茎叶可用作牲畜饲料。（源自《中国花卉报》2003.07.15）
