描述BoehmeriaJacq.苎麻属，荨麻科，100种，分布于热带和亚热带地区，我国有35种，分布极广，西南和中南最盛，其中苎麻B.nivea(L.)Gaud.中南部广为栽培，剥取其内皮作纺织的原料，为麻类中之上品，国际市场上称为中国麻。灌木或小乔木；叶对生或互生，3出脉，有锯齿；花单性异株，排成团伞花序或再排成穗状花序或圆锥花序式；雄花被3－5裂；雄蕊3－5，退化雌蕊球形或梨形；雌花被管状，2－4齿裂；果时有时有角、有翅或膨胀，子房内藏，1室，花柱柔弱，宿存；瘦果为花萼所紧包，最后分离。
