东汉安帝时，邓太后临朝，外戚专权。颍川人杜根，当时任郎中，他为人方正诚实，好急辩，他认为安帝已经长大，应当亲理朝政，太后应当交权。他和其他的郎官一起给朝廷上书，要求太后让权。太后听说大怒，派人把杜根抓起来，装进口袋里，放在宫殿上扑打，至死为止。执法的人知道杜根是为了国家而遭此祸，私下吩咐行刑时不要用力。事后杜根被扔到城外，慢慢苏醒过来。这时，邓太后又派人前来查验杜根死没死，杜跟遂在那里装死三天，最后终于逃脱。
