为轮藻科植物脆轮藻的全草。
【植物形态】
脆轮藻 水生绿色藻类，高10～50厘米，以分叉的假根固着于水底泥沙上。主茎细长，节上生侧枝；主茎和侧枝的节间中央是一个大细胞，外面通常有一层细长的细胞围绕成为一层叫做皮层细胞，节处由许多小细胞组成。侧枝上分布着"叶"，是单细胞的。繁殖时在"叶"腋中形成卵形的卵囊，卵囊下面有球形的精子囊，进行有性繁殖；也能进行营养繁殖。 生长于淡水中，特别是含有钙质和硅质的水中，在有粘泥和流动缓慢的池塘中生长繁茂。我国大部分地区有分布。
【化学成分】
含粗蛋白10.00～17.94%，碳水化物31.50～42%，灰分6.10%，氮1.60～2.87%(干重)，葡萄糖12.40%，木糖1.60%和鼠李糖0.65%(干重)。尚含天门冬氨酸、胱氨酸、赖氨酸、精氨酸、谷氨酸和亮氨酸等氨基酸。
【功用主治】
祛痰，止咳，平喘。治慢性气管炎，咳嗽，气喘，胸闷。
【临床应用】
治疗慢性气管炎 将从水中捞出的鱼草立即洗净，阴干或烘干，制成散剂、丸剂或片剂服用，每次5～7分(生药量)，每日2～3次饭前服，10天为一疗程。治疗896例，总有效率为75.7%，其中显效以上占35.5%。以祛痰、止咳作用较好，服药1～2天内，自觉咽部痒感减轻，咳痰快利，咳嗽减轻，胸部舒畅；经3～5天喘亦减轻，食欲增加，精神振作，病情好转。近期治愈者一般需1～2疗程。本品可减轻气管炎症，使分秘物减少，换气条件改善，从而起到祛痰、止咳、平喘的作用。临床上观察到，如每次剂量超过1钱以上时，则出现口干、恶心、腹泻等副作用，减少剂量后即可缓解或消失。
