常绿小乔木或灌木,高达3米。叶多数聚生枝顶,狭倒卵形,长5一12厘米,宽1—4厘米,全缘,顶端钝圆或内凹,基部楔形,边缘常外卷,有柄。聚伞花序顶生;花白色或带黄绿色,芳香,花柄长0.8—1.5厘米;萼片、花瓣、雄蕊各5;子房上位,密生短柔毛。蒴果近球形,有棱角,长达1.5厘米,成熟时3瓣裂,果瓣木质;种子鲜红色。花期5月,果熟期10月。

产宜溧山区,生林下或沟边,各地也多栽培,为园林绿化观赏树种;分布于浙江、福建、广东等省。

根、叶和种子均入药,根能祛风活络、散瘀止痛;叶能解毒、止血;种子能涩肠、固精;也可供观赏;对二氧化硫等有毒气体有较强的抗性。
