| 套作 relay intercropping 在前季作物生长后期的株 、行或畦间播种或栽植后季作物的种植方式。套作的两种或两种以上作物的共生期只占生育期的一小部分时间，是一种解决前后季作物间季节矛盾的复种方式。套作在中国起源甚早。6世纪《齐民要术》中已有大麻套种芜菁的记载。明代麦、棉套种和早、晚稻套种等已有一定发展。中国是世界上实行套作最普遍的国家之一。主要方式有：小麦套玉米或再套甘薯或大白菜；麦、油菜或蚕豆套棉花；稻套紫云英和水稻套甘蔗、黄麻、甘薯等。套作的主要作用是争取时间以提高光能和土地的利用率；提高单位面积产量；有利后季作物适时播种；缓和用工矛盾和避免旱涝或低温灾害。套作应选配适当的作物组合，调节好作物田间配置，掌握好套种时间，解决不同作物在套作共生期间互相争夺日光、水分、养分等矛盾，促使后季作物幼苗生长良好。
