寄生在线虫、变形虫、轮虫等小动物上的真菌。它包括形成或不形成捕捉器官的种。狭义的捕食性真菌指能形成捕捉器官或分泌粘性物质的真菌。如捕虫霉目的无柄霉属、梗丛霉属和泡囊虫霉属；丝孢目的肋孢属、隔指孢属和节丛孢属；水霉目的轮虫水霉属的一些种。壶菌目的囊壶菌属。根生壶菌属，虫霉目的擒虫霉属，丝孢目的杀虫孢属的一些种不形成任何捕捉器官，而是靠孢子经寄主的口腔感染。
