鳞翅目的1科。翅狭长，停歇时体斜上翘,幼虫钻蛀的艳色小型蛾类。本科昆虫通称银蛾（见图）。前翅往往具有金银光泽的斑纹，所以又名金银蛾科，头顶有丛毛；面部光滑；舌发达；触角长度是前翅的3/5～3/4；有眼罩；无单眼；下唇须向前或向上接近头顶，一般小而下垂；小颚退化。前翅披针形，有副室，有翅痣；后翅比前翅狭。成虫静止时常常头向下，紧贴物体表面，而腹部末端向上翘，形成一个斜角。雄性外生殖器爪形突退化；尾突形成一块瓣，上面有些毛和鳞状毛片；抱器瓣长圆形、椭圆形;基腹弧"W"字形。雌性外生殖器后表皮突长过前表皮突；后阴片上有刺；导管端片与囊导管之间有几丁质环；囊突呈双角形，表面有棘突。
幼虫多钻蛀阔叶树嫩茎、幼芽和果实，偶尔也潜叶。茧白丝状。中国东北常见为害森林的种类有山丁子银蛾和桦银蛾。有人认为本科昆虫应并入巢蛾科。
