别名老鹳，属于鹳科，学名为Ixobrychusminutus。
大型涉禽。全长约120厘米。体羽白色。眼周红色，前颈下部有饰物。肩羽、翅覆羽、飞羽黑色，具光泽。嘴长而粗壮，黑色。腿、脚红色。
在沼泽、湿地、塘边涉水觅食。主要吃鱼。蛙、昆虫等。性宁静而机警，飞行或步行时举止缓慢，休息时常单足站立。3月份开始繁殖，筑巢于高大乔木或建筑物上，每窝产卵3～5枚，白色。，雌雄轮流孵卵，孵化期约30天。
我国东方白鹳约有2500～3000只。在东北中、北部繁殖；越冬于长江下游及以南地区。
属于国家一级保护动物。
