分布在河北、河南、陕西、山东、江苏、安徽、浙江、湖南、福建、台湾、广东、四川及云南。
成虫体长40-44毫米，翅展120-125毫米。体黑色有光泽，局部密生金色纤毛。头稍宽于中胸背板，前缘及额顶各有1块黄褐色斑；复眼琥珀色。前胸背板短于中胸背板，侧缘斜微外突，外片有皱褶，两侧有褐斑，内、外片上有红褐色斑，中间有隆起的"X"形纹，其前方角各有1暗纹。腹部各节侧缘黄褐，背瓣完全盖住发音器:腹瓣大，呈舌状，缘区红褐色。前、后翅透明，基部呈烟褐色，脉纹黄褐色。
在北方2-3年完成1代。若虫在地下过冬;老熟若虫傍晚出土爬到树干上脱皮化蝉。成虫产卵于苹果、桃、李、梨、杨、柳、榆、槐等枝条上，为林、果一害。
