风矢量(风向、风速)在空中水平和(或)垂直距离上的变化。对飞机起飞和着陆安全威胁最大的是低空风切变，即发生在着陆进场或起飞爬升阶段的风切变。它不仅能使飞机航迹偏离，而且可能使飞机失去稳定。如果驾驶员判断失误和处置不当，则常会产生严重后果。世界上曾因此发生多起机毁人亡的飞行事故。风切变还严重影响火箭飞行的稳定性，火箭设计和发射时的环境限制条件包括风切变。风切变主要由锋面（冷暖空气的交界面）、逆温层、雷暴、复杂地形地物和地面摩擦效应等因素引起。为了确保安全，国际航空、航天和气象界都积极开展低空风切变的研究。风切变常分为以下几种：①风的水平切变是水平风向和（或）风速在水平距离上的变化。②风的垂直切变是水平风向和（或）风速在垂直距离上的变化。③垂直风的切变是垂直风（即升降气流）在水平或航迹方向上的变化。下冲气流是垂直风的切变的一种形式，呈现为一股强烈的下降气流。范围小而强度很大的下冲气流称为微下冲气流。
