美国劳伦斯·利弗莫尔实验室研制的b-83热核炸弹是进入美国核武器库的最新重力炸弹，并可能成为最后一种核炸弹。b-83于1979年1月开始研制，第一次空投试验在当年年底进行。1983年6月首批产品完成，三个月以后开始批量生产。
b-83的直径为45.72厘米，长3.66米。重1088.62千克，当量为低兆吨级（1-2兆吨），投弹高度为45.72-15240米范围之间，速度达2马赫，用于打击加固的洲际弹道导弹地下井、指挥与控制通信掩体以及核武器储存库等目标。到1987年年中，美国有1000枚b-83，计划今后再储备1500枚。这些新型炸弹用于取代那些老式的mk-28、mk-43以及mk-53等炸弹。
