[形态] 该鸟体长约65厘米.体羽背部黑色,腹羽白色,并杂有1-2道黑色横纹,皮下脂肪很厚,因此从外部形态看腹部十分丰满.两翼演变退化成鳍状,通体羽毛细小呈鳞状.该鸟生有三个脚趾,趾间生蹼,还有一小趾分生在后方.
[生态] 企鹅原是飞行的鸟类,经过长期的演变,而成为生活在水中的一种水鸟.在水中游泳时,用翅膀划水,速度很快,故有"水下飞鸟"之称.主食海产生物,如枪乌贼(Loligo)等.
[饲养管理] 企鹅的饲养管理比较简单,一般用房式笼饲养,笼的规格为8米×6米×2.5米(长×宽×高),另设全封闭的小房子供夜栖.饲料主要为各种鱼虾以及人为添加的骨粉、复合维生素等.
[繁殖] 该鸟每年9-10月进入繁殖期.在陆地的卵石滩上集群繁殖,一般以雄鸟孵卵,孵化期36-40天,雏鸟经过一个月后就能集群随成鸟到海里去捕捉食物.
