泛指谱线偏离正常频率位置的现象。引起谱线位移的原因很多。例如，当光源沿视线方向运动时，它发出的谱线频率会发生变化，这就是多普勒效应。多普勒效应所引起的谱线位移被广泛地应用于天文学研究中。例如测量天体的视向运动速度和自转速度，研究双星的运动等等。
光源处于强引力场也会引起谱线向红端位移。例如白矮星表面的引力场很强，观测已经证实了白矮星谱线有引力红移。此外，像二次斯塔克效应、辐射原子和中性氢原子的碰撞过程等都可能产生谱线位移。在星系世界，已经发现绝大多数河外星系和全部类星体的光谱都向长波方向位移（红移）。目前观测到天体的最大谱线位移，是类星体的谱线红移。有的类星体的谱线位移量达到谱线原来波长的 3.5倍。河外天体的这种红移大多认为是宇宙学红移。
