限制工作机械位置的主令电器。一般于工作机械到达终点时发生作用。故又称终端开关。限位开关的原理和结构与行程开关基本相同，但两者的用途不同。行程开关要控制的是工作机械的行程，而限位开关要控制的则是工作机械的位置，且往往是终端位置或极限位置。例如，龙门刨床控制装置中的限位开关，用于控制刨床工作台的位置。当工作台向一方运动到接近其极限位置时，限位开关便动作，转换控制电路，迫使工作台反向运动，以免发生工作台无限止地朝一个方向运动而脱离机座。
