这种方法的原理：平行光束经过被测透镜后照射在Ronchi光栅上，在Rochi光栅后周期性的位置会形成Talbot像，在光栅Talbot像的位置再放置一个相同的Ronchi光栅就会产生莫尔条纹，当入射的平行光束在垂直于光栅栅线方向有个微小的角度变化，莫尔条纹就会产生一个相应的明显移动；由莫尔条纹的原理可知，莫尔条纹的移动量与入射平行光束的变化角度有一个对应关系。
