专门载运木材(原木和成材)的货船。木材是水运量仅次于矿砂、煤、谷物的大宗干货，因此出现了运木的专用船舶。运木船为尾机型、单甲板、有首楼的船。木材积载因数（见船舶积载）较大，为1.9～3米3/吨，所以船舱容积较大。运木船较宽，舱内和甲板上凸出部件少。甲板两舷设有立柱，拦护木材。甲板上堆放木材的数量，可超过总载量的1/3,因此运木船装载木材的能力大于常规杂货船。
运木船载重量一般在2万吨以下，多为5000吨到1万吨,最大的成材船为5万吨级。运木船航速每小时13.5海里左右。吨位较大和航速较高的往往还有其他设备，以便在回程或木材运量不足时运输其他货物。
木材体积大，装卸费事，所以船舶停港时间长。为了提高装卸效率，近年来正向成组运输发展。为适应成组运输需要，运木船舱口要加大，并设置起重量为20～25吨的吊杆或起重机，有的船设置起重量为50吨的起重机。
