从20世纪70年代开始，西方各军事大国纷纷对新的发射源进行了广泛研究和探索，开展了诸如电热化学炮、电磁炮、定向能武器等电能武器的研究，以期取代传统火炮，但其中取得了突破性进展、发展最迅速，即将投入实战使用的是电热化学炮。电热化学炮是将电能转变为热能使推进剂燃烧，产生高温高压气体推动弹丸高速发射的武器，由电源、脉冲形成网络、炮身、炮架等部分组成。电热化学炮的炮弹由等离子体喷管、推进剂和弹丸等组成。
电热化学炮的主要优点是：弹丸的初速度大，最高可达3—4千米/秒，射程远，其炮口动能比传统火炮提高约25—55％，除发射电热化学炮弹以外，也可发射普通炮弹。
