在美国东海岸马里兰州的阿伯丁平原深处，有块面积达几百平方千米的军事区域，被称为“美国陆军兵器试验场”。从1898年美西战争到1991年海湾战争，美国陆军所使用的大多数常规武器都是在这里经过严格测试后，才正式批准列装部队。可以说，阿伯丁是美国陆军装备奔向战场前的“最后一关”。他是美国陆军历史最悠久的试验场，负责美军常规武器的试验与鉴定工作，是世界著名的试验鉴定中心。另外，它还有一个特殊功能——实地检测外国陆军武器的性能数据，作为美国研制新武器时的参考。朝鲜战争期间，阿伯丁试验场实地检测了从欧洲获得的各类苏制坦克战车和轻武器，为朝鲜前线的美军提供了详实准确的苏制武器性能报告。
随着时间的推移，这里逐渐变成一个容纳世界各国各时期陆战武器的陈列馆，被军事爱好者私下称为“阿伯丁陆军武器博物馆”。在这里，数百辆战车呈方阵整齐停放在旷野里，据说欣赏这些战车需要开吉普车才行。在维系步兵生存与战斗的基本装备中，枪械是直接影响战斗力的首要装备。可以说，战争的历史就是枪械革新的历史。美国人深刻理解枪械设计与战争形态的相互影响：南北战争采用的斯宾塞连珠枪使陈日的线形战斗队形走进“死胡同”，二战中的m1加兰德半自动步枪一下子使美军步兵班火力提高了5倍；越南战争中不断完善的m1 6步枪成为后来步兵小口径武器的基础。
