1924年产生于法国。由法国作家布雷东发起。在巴黎先后发表两次《超现实主义宣言》，形成了超现实主义画派。认为“下意识的领域”，如梦境、幻觉、本能等是创作的源泉，主张从潜意识的思想实际中求得“超现实”。作品主要描写潜意识领域的矛盾现象，把生与死、过去与未来、真实与幻觉统一起来，具有恐怖、离奇、怪诞的特点。代表人物有米罗·恩斯特等。
