枯井园自然保护区位于安徽岳西县,面积4000公顷,其中核心区就达1800公顷,全区森林覆盖率高达93%,保存着较为完整的大面积天然林,在海拔千米的沼泽中生长着成片30余公顷的千年紫柳林,堪称“中华一绝”。保护区内物种资源 丰富,有维管束植物1500余种,其中有国家级保护的大别山五针松、连香树、鹅掌楸等20多种及珍稀植物都支杜鹃、交让木、黄山木兰等;还有两栖、兽类动物72种、鸟类123种、昆虫1500种,其中有国家重点保护野生动物金钱豹、大鲵、小灵猫、白冠长尾雉等。
枯井园位处北亚热带常绿阔叶混交林和温带针阔混交林过渡交汇地带,特殊的地理位置及完整的森林植被,为野生资源生长提供了良好的生态环境,这里可供开发利用的植物多达300余种。天麻、麝香、苦丁茶、薇菜、猕猴桃誉为保护区“五宝”;厚朴、三七、灵芝、五味子等名贵药材储量丰富;郎菜、香菇、金针、木耳遍布林间。
