e-6a是美国波音公司根据美国海军要求研制的通信中继飞机，能通过超低频与在水下的“三叉戟”核潜艇通信。1983年开始研制，按计划于1989年11月开始交付6架，1990年形成初期作战能力，1989～1991年再交付8架，组成共15架飞机的机队。其机体有75%与e-3a相同，主要区别是去掉旋转雷达天线罩，在翼尖有电子对抗吊舱。其收放式超低频天线长7925米，在通信时，飞机绕小圆圈轨道飞行，天线近似垂直下垂，能保证潜艇在水下用拖曳式天线接收。
