经济是社会为满足种种需求而进行的生产和再生产活动，结构是指各组成部分的搭配和排列，经济结构是经济领域中各种组成部分的搭配排列形式和比例关系，是历史发展到一定阶段上的生产关系的总和，是国民经济各部门、各地区、各种成分、各个组织，以及社会再生产各个方面的构成及其相互联系，相互制约的关系。简言之，经济结构是国民经济诸因素的总和及其相互关系。
合理的经济结构应该具有这样一些特点：第一，能充分利用有利条件，避免不利条件：第二，能充分有效地利用人力、物力、财力和自然资源；第三，能充分利用现有物质技术基础；第四，科学技术、教育、交通等各项社会事业能协调发展，社会再生产能顺利进行；第五，生产发展速度快，人民生活水平提高，积累增长快，能实现高速度、高消费、高积累的良性循环；第六，能够保持各经济因素的平衡衔接和协调发展；第七，能保证取得最大的经济效益，达到社会劳动的最大节约，和社会需要的充分满足。
