德国机械工程师，汽油机的发明者和改进者之一。他设计并制造了世界上第一辆实用的内燃机汽车。1844年11月25日出生，卒于1929年 4月 4日。本茨初在家乡卡尔斯鲁厄学习机械工程，离开学校后在一家锁厂工作。1885年本茨制成了单气缸二冲程三轮汽车，现保存在慕尼黑。1886年本茨获得汽车制造的专利权。1893年制造出四轮汽车，1899年生产出第一辆赛车。1900年，本茨公司已售出装有三马力发动机的汽车达4000辆，成为欧洲最大的汽车制造公司。1926年本茨公司同戴姆勒汽车公司合并。
