哈兹里特自幼受家庭熏陶，热爱自由、平等。青年时结识了骚塞、柯尔律治、华兹华斯和兰姆兄妹。他们一起写诗著文歌颂法国大革命，抨击英国政治。
除了政治性辩论文章外，他还写过大量戏剧评论，收集在1818年出版的哈兹里特戏剧评论集《英国戏剧概观》中。19世纪20年代的英国正经历着莎士比亚作品的复兴，著名的演出在伦敦几乎每日可见。哈兹里特虽曾说过他爱读剧本甚于观看演出，然而对于和演员交往和观看表演他很感兴趣。他在考文垂花园剧院中的固定座位给他以极大的乐趣。
哈兹里特所著《莎士比亚戏剧中的人物》(1817)和《伊丽莎白时代的戏剧文学》(1820)对后世关于莎士比亚戏剧和伊丽莎白时代戏剧的研究都有一定的影响。他还曾修订、编辑《旧剧集成》出版。
