使用不同的溶剂或引入取代基所引起的化合物的光谱 (通常指紫外-可见光谱)的吸收峰向长波方向的移动。其机理可由跃迁能级发生了变化来阐明。当化合物溶于极性溶剂时产生溶剂化,由于激发态和基态的电荷分布不同而使这两种状态的溶剂化程度不同。例如,溶剂的极性愈大,有机分子的成键π轨道向反键π*轨道的跃迁波长愈长,说明激发态的极性比基态大,能级降低得比基态多,从而发生红移效应。
