申农在1948年出版的《关于通讯的数学理论》一书中，建立了通讯的一般模型，给出了表示信息量的精确量度，并在此基础上处理了信道容量、编码和编码的效率、噪声对通讯可靠性的影响等问题。他的工作开拓了通讯理论的定量研究,给现代通讯理论奠定了基础,在自然科学和社会科学的许多部门发生了巨大影响，给它们处理所研究的对象中的信息过程提供了信息论方法，从而发展了一种新的科学研究工具。
