现代汽车生产的特点就是产品的多型号、短周期。为了满足不同的生产需求，就需要不断地改型。虽然现代计算机模拟技术不断完普可以完成各种动力、强度刚度分析但研究开发中仍需要做成实物以验证其外观形象、工装、可安装性和可拆卸性。对于形状、结构十分复杂的零件可以用快速成型技术制做零件原型以验证设计人员的设计思想，并利用零件原型做功能性和装配性检验。
利用快速成型技术，可以实现汽车的前后保险杠总成试制、主／副仪表板总成试制、内饰门板等结构样件／功能样件等试制、地毯热压成型样件等试制。例如，南方某内饰件公司接到某汽车生产厂商开发内饰件（全套 19 件）的设计和生产任务，完成这些内饰件的生产任务很急，其设计定型阶段的手板制作必须在15d内完成。北京某公司接到此订单后，对其欲制作的内饰件进行了合理的加工组合，充分发挥快速成型机速度快，加工不受复杂程度限制的特点，对异形复杂件用激光决速成型机加工制作，而较大型简单型件则以 CNC 进行加工。这样，决速成型机和 CNC 互相补充、配合加工，提高了生产的效率，又保证了质量，按规定的时间圆满地完成了面板制作。
体积较小、形状复杂而强度要求不是很高的个别金属和非金属零件可以直接用激光选区烧结粉末快速成型的方法来制得。
