爱琴文化出现于公元前第3千纪,范围及于爱琴海各岛屿、希腊半岛和小亚细亚沿岸地区，以克里特岛和希腊半岛上的迈锡尼为中心，又称克里特-迈锡尼文化,公元前12世纪以后湮没。19世纪末对爱琴文化的考古发掘发现有城市、宫殿、住宅、陵墓和城堡等遗址。其建筑布局、石砌技术、柱式和壁画、金属构件等都有很高水平。爱琴文化的建筑对古希腊建筑颇有影响。
公元前第 2千纪，克里特岛上的建筑风格精巧纤丽，房屋开敞,柱式上粗下细，极有特色；壁画风格朴实,色彩丰富。有代表性的实例是米诺斯王宫。王宫依山修建，规模宏大，内部空间高低错落，楼梯走道曲折回环，在希腊神话中被称为"迷宫"（见彩图）。其中正殿、王后寝室、浴室、露天剧场、库房等都布置在一个南北长51.8米，东西宽27.4米的中央大院周围。
