According to Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng (Tones and Explanations of Words) by Zhu Junsheng, a scholar in the Qing Dynasty, and Cihai (Lexicographical Dictionary), the word“汛” (xun) in the phrase“汛地” (xundi)has the same meaning as“讯” (xun,meaning“ask”);thus“汛地” (xundi) means“ the place where the passers-by are interrogated and examined”.
