由于太平洋洋脊偏侧于东南方,在太平洋东部形成了扩张性的海底地壳:东太平洋海隆。但在太平洋中西部广阔的洋底,地貌复杂,存在着一系列的岛弧、海沟、洋底火山山脉和被洋底山脉、岛弧分隔成的较小的洋盆等,看来并不完全像是由海底扩张所产生的洋底地貌,而更像是古泛大洋洋底的一部分。因为海底扩张所形成的地貌,除了海沟、岛弧、沿岸山脉外,大部分应是较为平坦的、从洋脊到海沟一定倾斜的海隆地貌。虽然有人试图对此作出解释,但未有较公认、一致的看法。
