Typhoon waves (including tropical storm waves and severe tropical storm waves) at certain observation points in shantou coastal areas have been selected by the authors to study the following 3 aspects: (1)analysis of in situ observed records; (2)hindcasting of typhoon waves and their basic characteristics; and (3) determining each typhoon wave element in various recurrence periods.

The paper analyzes the typhoon waves of survey site W1 at the mouth of theDaya Bay and W2 inside the bay, and compare them with the typhoon wave inside theXinhai Bay of the Haikou City so to expound the difference of typhoon wave distribu-tions between bays of different geographical positions.

Several important elements affecting typhoon wave calculation are clarified in this paper.
