利用铁心的磁饱和性能把输入的正弦波电压变成窄脉冲形输出电压的变压器。可用于燃烧器的点火、晶闸管的触发等。脉冲变压器结构为原绕组套在断面较大的由硅钢片叠成的铁心柱上，副绕组套在坡莫合金材料制成的断面较小的易于高度饱和的铁心柱上，在两柱中间可设置磁分路。电压和磁通的关系如图所示。输入电压u1是正弦波，在左面铁心中产生正弦磁通Φ1。右面铁心中磁通Φ2高度饱和，是平顶波，它只有在零值附近发生变化，并立即饱和达到定值。当Φ2过零值的瞬间，在副绕组中就感应出极陡的窄脉冲电动势e2。磁分路有气隙存在, Φσ基本上按线性变化，与漏磁相似，其作用在于保证Φ1为正弦波。
