住宅的开间：住宅设计中，住宅的宽度是指一间房屋内一面墙皮到另一面墙皮之间的实际距离。因为是就一自然间的宽度而言，故又称为开间。与住宅的进深一样，住宅的开间在设计上也有严格的规定。就我国目前大量建造的砖混住宅来讲，住宅开间一般不得超过3.3米。规定较小的开间尺度，可有效缩短楼板的空间跨度，增强住宅结构整体性、稳定性和抗震性。
