公路交通控制系统在交通管理中，为预防交通阻塞，促进交通畅通，通过公路监控、通信设施等对公路实行控制、协调和诱导交通的系统。有孤立的交叉口控制、路线交通信号协调控制和区域控制系统等类型控制系统一般采用与变化的交通情况相适应的设备，如计算机网络、公路断面的电子设备等:在交通枢纽区域，有用电子设备控制和协调公路交通的指挥中心.为给交通控制系统提供信息，在沿线适当地点配置各种监视、感应装置:如装置在立交桥、路口、特殊断面用以监视公路交通运行情况的摄像头，可统计通过公路断面车流量，轴载并自动传输到控制中心分析交通情况的车辆传感器。同时在沿线装置一些显示、控制设施.如交通信号灯.在公路上及交叉口区道上一般用绿、黄、红色显示的指挥交通的信号灯、可变信息板，在公路上显示交通信息并预告、疏导交通的电子显示屏:还有其他的可变限速标志、移动标志及关闭、开放交通的信号等设施。公路交通运行信息通过通讯设施传输到指挥、控制中心，通过计算机分析交通情况.分配交通流量，处理交通拥挤、堵塞、事故，通过信号灯联动、控制设备的指挥疏导交通。所有的信息来源及指令发布都通过电缆、光缆等传送。另外，交通控制系统还包括同相邻交叉口设有制约关系的单一交叉口的信号控制(点控制)和连续几个交叉口互相关联的自动信号协调控制(线控制)等类型。
