rt-61迫击炮于1954年开始生产。该炮射程远、精度高、威力大、重量轻，而且具有鲜明的特色-线膛迫击炮，其身管外部还有螺旋纹，不仅可以用来精确调整火炮射角，同时还能增加身管的散热面积。火炮发射榴弹时最大射程为8135米，发射火箭增程弹时达13000米，最大射速20发/分，正常射速6发/分。全炮空重582千克，炮身长2080毫米。该炮的缺点是结构较为复杂，且不能直接瞄准，但瑕不掩瑜，现已有多个国家将其改进为自行迫击炮。
