最早的枪膛内带有膛线的火枪诞生于15世纪初的德国。但当时还只是直线形的沟槽，这是为了更方便是从枪口装填弹丸。
据文献记载，意大利至迟在1476年就已有螺旋形线膛的枪支。螺旋形膛线可使弹丸在空气中稳定地放转飞行，提高射击准确性和射程。“膛线”英文为refile，音译为“来复”，线膛枪也因此称为“来复枪”。17世纪初，丹麦军队最先装备使用了来复枪。但由于来复线制作成本高和从枪口装填弹药不便，所以许多国家的军队不愿装备使用有螺旋形的枪。
