Topological characteristics reflect the inherent attribute of the kinematic chains in this paper,some topological characteristics,like mechanical advantage,compactness,stiffness and the dynamic sensitivity of several kinematic chains,have been analyzed and compared,which can help designers to select the basic chains in conceptual design.

The designer can evaluate and optimize kinematic chains by studying their topological characteristics at conceptual design stage.
