珊瑚
珊瑚可以说是地球上最伟大在的建筑师。从亿万年前的的古生代起,珊瑚就在地球上建造了无数的石灰岩礁体。这些化石珊瑚礁，在漫长的地质史中,有的经由地壳板块远动,被抬升成为陆地上的珊瑚礁或石灰岩,有的则成为分布在热带海洋中星罗棋部的岛屿。
珊瑚礁可分为缘礁、堡礁和环礁三大类。缘礁是分布在陆地边缘的珊瑚礁。堡礁指分布在陆地的外缘和陆地之间有水域分隔的珊瑚礁。由于这种珊瑚礁像堡垒一样拱卫着陆地，因此称为堡礁。环礁则是指分布呈环状的珊瑚礁，中间部分的水域也称为岛湖，大多数分布在远离陆地的大洋中。
珊瑚礁的形成，除了造礁珊瑚扮演关键角色之外，还要加上其他动物，例如：贝类、石灰藻等分泌钙质骨骼的胶结作用，并且经过长期的累积，才可形区大的地质构造——珊瑚礁。珊瑚礁形成的基本条件是珊瑚的建造作用必须高过其他生物的破坏作用。在光照充足，海域温度适宜而无污染的海域，珊瑚的造礁作用旺盛。由于受到各地环境因素及地质作用的影响，因此在不同地区常形成不同形态的珊瑚礁。
