指累进税率按课税对象数量划分等级的起点和止点的区间。如我国现行个人所得税，工资、薪金所得适用的9级超额累进税率表，第2级为全月应纳税所得额超过500元至2000元的部分，本级起点为500元，止点为2000元，本级级距为1500元。级距小，累进税率的累进速度快，累进程度高；级距大，累进税率的累进速度慢，累进程度低。累进税率的级距设计，体现国家对课税对象数量的不同区间的税收负担政策。级距设计可以是等量的，也可以是不等量的或递增的、递减的。
