利用蒸汽能量产生原动力的成套设备，包括蒸汽发生器、汽轮机（或蒸汽机）及其辅助设备。最早的蒸汽动力装置是锅炉和蒸汽机的组合。18世纪中叶，蒸汽动力开始在英国用于矿井提水、纺织机驱动等，大大提高了生产力，引起了世界性的工业革命。19世纪中叶，蒸汽动力装置开始应用于机车和船舶，使人类的交通运输工具发生了一次飞跃。19世纪末，出现了汽轮机，它比蒸汽机热效率更高、单机功率更大、更适宜于驱动发电机，因而得到迅速发展，使人类进入了电气时代。到20世纪70年代,蒸汽动力装置的单机功率已达1300兆瓦,热效率达40％，利用它发电的成本也不断降低。50年代开始，利用核能的蒸汽动力装置也有了很大的发展。随着新能源的开发，太阳能、地热、海水温差等动力装置相继出现。图为简单的蒸汽动力装置的示意图。锅炉将燃料燃烧,使水变成蒸汽,蒸汽在汽轮机内作功（推动发电机）后排入凝汽器，凝结成水，经过锅炉给水泵送入锅炉内再蒸发成汽。
