材料管理的主要内容，包括选择材料资源，调查材料产地，分析物资流向，进行材料需求预测，编制材料计划，检查材料计划执行情况，保证材料供应和节约使用等。主要做法有：①编好材料计划,在编制计划前,摸清计划期内的生产任务和机械设备的需用情况，期末物资库存和消耗定额的变化情况，检查上期材料计划执行情况；进而确定本期需要量和期初、期末储备量，编制材料物资平衡表，分析材料的平衡程度，以及确定平衡短线材料的对策等。②加强消耗定额（万元投资材料消耗定额、单位产品材料消耗定额和分部分项工程实物量综合定额等）、储备定额和资金定额的管理，合理储备、供应和使用材料，以节约材料和资金。③建立材料验收、仓库管理、运输、材料供应和材料核算等制度，以组织和监督材料的合理使用，并推行材料的节约代用和综合利用措施，以降低使用过程中的消耗等。
