剑花是一种攀缘植物，大都植根于土壤之中。七星剑花的奇异之处是它喜好生长在没有水份、没有土壤的七星岩悬崖峭壁之上。七星剑花属仙人掌科，茎狭长，三棱有节，状如节鞭，向四处蔓延，一节一节地向上攀登，所以又称量天尺。夏天开白花，日闭夜开，因而又有神仙剑花之美誉。
七星剑花长于七星岩的峭壁上，故而得名。是驰名中外的肇庆特产之一。
剑花性味甘、凉、入肺，具有清热痰、除积热、止气痛、理痰火的功效。剑花煲汤具有清心润肺、清暑解热、除痰治咳的作用，其味清香、汤甜滑，实为佐膳美料，为“煲汤一族”的广东人所喜爱，更是远销省、港、澳乃至东南亚各地。
