标志着意大利文艺复兴建筑史开始的，是佛罗伦萨主教堂的穹顶，主教堂是13世纪末行会从贵族手中夺取了政权后，作为共和政体的纪念碑而建造的。八边形的歌坛，对边宽度是42.2米，预计要用穹顶覆盖。这在当时，技术上十分困难，不仅跨度大，而且墙高超过了五十米，连脚手架的模架都是很艰巨的工程。
其设计师，佰鲁乃列斯基，出身于行会工匠，精通机械、铸工是杰出的雕刻家和工艺家，在透视学和数学方面都有过建树，是文艺复兴时代所特有的那种多才多艺的巨人。
为了突出穹顶，砌了12米高的一段鼓座，连同采光亭在内，总高107米，成了整个城市轮廓线的中心，即便在今天，这个高度也是一幢超高层的建筑，足以成为一个城市的标志性建筑物。在当时，这是建筑历史上的一次大幅度的进步，标志着文艺复兴时期创造者的英风豪气。
佛罗伦萨主教堂的穹顶被公正地认为是意大利文艺复兴建筑的第一个作品，新时代的第一朵报春花。
