集中在某一机械构件的选定点上的假想质量。机械在运转过程中，它的动能与所有构件的动能之和相等。等效转动惯量是给予机械中某一构件的一个假想转动惯量，在机械运转过程中，它的动能与机械中所有构件的实际动能之和相等。应用这个概念可以简化单自由度机构的机械动力学问题，即把各构件的质量、转动惯量等简化为等效构件（见等效力）具有的等效质量（或等效转动惯量）。等效质量和等效转动惯量的值，与机械中各该构件和选定构件的速度参量的比值有关，因而是选定构件位置的函数，与构件的真实速度大小无关。
仅在动能相等这个意义上，等效质量或等效转动惯量与机械中所有构件的惯性量等效，而不能在别的意义上应用它们，如等效质量的惯性力并不等于机械中各构件惯性力之和。
