Pleistocene Epoch

   第四纪的第一个世,约开始于164万年前,结束于约1万年前。更新世时形成的地层称更新统,位于上新统之上 、全新统之下。1839年,英国C.莱伊尔把巴黎盆地含软体动物化石70%为现生种的地层称为更新世地层。更新统下限的确定见晚第三纪。
